110th BISHOP WILTON SHOW 2008

This year the show featured several new events, all of which were very well received. Mighty Smith at Bishop Wilton ShowMighty Smith entertained young and old with feats of strength (see the photograph of him in the middle of a tug-of-war), dogs of all shapes and sizes entered a variety of fun classes and those interested in ferrets were able to learn more and, if they wished, enter competitions for their furry companions. A gun dog display further added to the day’s fun. The regular attractions were also in evidence, with the ever popular Ebor Morris Men providing a colourful and jolly spectacle, the Owl Man enabling the public to get close to some magnificent birds, the Bucking Bronco, who provided a challenge for those willing to take it up and Uncle Mal getting the younger elements of the crowd into the mood. The usual horse classes drew a good entry and the trade stands were, as ever, well supported. Craft A First & Special Prize Entryand WI tents are always an integral part of the show and provide a forum to demonstrate diverse local talent in many departments. The new layout of the show helped give a new perspective and drew many favourable comments. If you wish to make observations, suggestions or offers of help with next year’s show please go to the Show website and make contact. We already have some ideas for the future and hope to have a brass band and, possibly, a local celebrity also to give a talk later in the day. Depending on the blue tongue restrictions in place it is envisaged to re-introduce the sheep classes both for rare and minority breeds and commercial stock. The big attraction next year is Jez the Stunt Man who uses cycles and motor bikes in his spectacular show. A good day in prospect we hope you will agree. All we need now is helpful weather.
