THE OLD VILLAGE HALL

This is the Old Village Hall on its site in the Main Street of Bishop Wilton.
The right hand portion is the oldest, having been a Methodist Chapel (with its tell-tale windows) in Sutton-on-Derwent. It was transported to Bishop Wilton 70 years ago.
The history of the hall, which was initially the Men's Institute, is explained on the Local History website.
We will display photos here in recognition of the role that the hall has played in the life of the village over 70 years of use:

The War Years - Local History Event in February 2009
The Local History Group arranged an exhibition and a dramatised presentation involving school children to recall the war years in the village and celebrate the role the Village Hall played as a school room for evacuees.

WI Group Rally c1949/1950
The group is interesting with the tents on the Old Show Field behind but spot also the end of the Village Hall (and a window) before the extension was built. It is only a fragment of the original building but historic nevertheless!

Methodists' Watchnight - New Year's Eve 1957/58
Of particular interest because it shows the hall before the ceiling was lowered. Also, a number of those depicted have been involved in preparations for the new hall!
